Crisis management involves identifying a crisis, planning a response to the crisis and confronting and resolving the crisis. Within public relations crisis management relates to negative publicity that could adversely effect the success of the company That is why it is necessary to have in place proactive plans to manage crisis when they arise. Companies should always plan ahead and project likely outcomes. They should avoid decisions that have the potential to turn into a crisis. They should know their worst case scenarios are and have a contingency plan to manage them. In the case of a crisis, act immediately to prevent or counter the spread of the negative information. Containment may require intense media activities. Use every media available to you to provide a counter argument or question the credibility of the original negative publicity. Managing crisis is no longer about issuing cease and desist letters and hoping the news goes away. Developing a crisis communication plan is the key to effective PR and crisis management. |
