The Internet Changing the Shape of Business

In the past, most business was done in person. If you needed clothes you went into a shop and bought them (or sometimes the fabric to make them). If you needed a service done you sought recommendations from friends and then went in search of the person yourself. The invention of mail order catalogs began to change the way that customers shopped for products. While in many cases they still had to rely on shops and stores placing the orders for them, they were no longer restricted to the limited choices that stores carried. Business changed again, even more drastically, with the invention of the Internet.

The Internet radically changed the way that we shop for goods and services. We never have to leave the house if we don’t want to. Everything that we ever need to survive can be ordered online, from groceries to clothes to cleaning services. You can plan and book an entire vacation without ever talking to another person. While this has brought many advantages to consumers, it has caused businesses to drastically change their business and marketing plans.

To even begin to be competitive, businesses need to at least have a user-friendly website; though it also helps to have pages on many of the major social networking sites. In the larger markets, sometimes having a website isn’t enough. Many companies use an seo reporting tool to help them monitor their websites ranking on search engines like Google. Businesses also have to be aware of what is being said about them online. It doesn’t take much for a disgruntled customer to quickly spread negative remarks about a company that could have long-term effects on the business if it is left unmonitored.

There have been many changes in the way that companies market and run their businesses; especially in the last 40 or so years. As the Internet, and society, grows and changes there are sure to be many more. And one day looking back on this time will offer similar disbelief at how society ever survived.
